Interviews #2: Marit Kahrs
After interview with Mattias, it is time to present Norwegian orienteer - Marit Kahrs from Bakkelaget SK (well-known sport club from southern Oslo founded in 1909 and triple winner of Jukola which had members like Bjørnar Valstad, Anders Nordberg, Holger Hott, Hanne Staff and Anne Margrethe Hausken). Marit has won WRE in sprint on last year´s Croatia open and here are her answers;
Hello Marit,
Orienteering season 2009 is over, what will be your plan for this winter? What do you want to improve the most?
- I want to improve my strength in heavy terrain. Until now my benefit has been running in easy terrain.
What are your impression of 2009 in orienteering. Are you satisfy with it or…
- My goals for this season was to have fun, and I think I've reached that.
Your goal for the next season will be...
- The same as 2009, as long I think orienteering is fun I'll continue to train and compete like last year.
By your opinion, which are main advateges and disadvatages of living in Norway comparing to other Scandinavian countries (Sweden or Finland)?
- I belive that we in Nor have tougher terrains compared to the other countries. But no big differences.
How much hours you train per year and how much of it do you working on your orienteering technique?
- I don't have any overview over my training or how much time I spend on orienteering skills, maybe 20% is orienteering technique. But to improve my orienteering I should train more technique than I'm doing today.
Are you satisfy with it and what do you think, how much percent of training should be orienteering?
- Since I don't have any goals with my training others than have fun, I don't spend so much energy to think what i should or not.
As being a member of Bakkelaget SK, what would you say, what makes you different comparing to other Norwegian orienteering clubs? Do you think Bakkelaget have potential to win next year´s Jukola or Tiomila in women class?
- BSK has this year got a lot of new runners I think will improve the club very much. If we have the chance to win in 2010? I don't know. I think we need another year to get the experience. I believe our benefit is that we have a very good social environment amongst the girls and a strong team spirit. That's important to succeed in the big relays.
You visited Croatia. Name 3 things which worth visiting Croatia.
- The terrain/ nature. The people. And the climate.
What is your comment about karst type of terrain? What are main advatages and disadvatages of this terrain and why?
- Look at Mattias's answer ;).
Will you visit Croatia again?
- Since we only stayed for 1 week we did not have the opportunity to see all the things we wanted. So, absolutely I want to go back and also for participating in Crotia Open.
You won in first day of Croatia open (sprint distance) in front of Lena Eliasson and Karoliina Sundberg. Is sprint your favorite discipline or…?
- As mentioned earlyer, my benefit is to run on easy ground and therefore sprint has been the distance were I until now have reached the best results.
Finally, what would you say to orienteers which are planing to visit Croatia open? What could they expect?
- They will meet a very different terrain compared to Scandinavia. The terrain require precision in the technique because everything looks so similar. I've learned that if I lost the contact between map and terrain it's easy to make big mistakes. But the most important, they will meet a very well organized arrangement with a lot of nice people. I was impressed of your arrangement and will definitely recommend other orienteerers to participate.
